Questions
The city question first, because it decides whether you pay at all. The main page has the street-or-lot table.
What will the city collect, and from where?
Partly. The Department of Public Works Solid Waste Division collects dead dogs and cats from residential households and city streets when reported, at (313) 876-0004 or through the Improve Detroit form. Its page states its collectors will not go onto private property and do not collect from commercial locations. A raccoon in your yard, anything in a garage or building, and anything on a rental or commercial lot is outside that scope.
I own the building but do not live there. How does that work?
You call or send the form, say who is on site or has a key, and say who gets the invoice. The operator meets a tenant, a super or a keyholder and bills as you direct. Put the access arrangement in the form so nobody makes a trip to a locked building.
There is a smell in a shared wall of my building. Is that a job?
If it points at a reachable space, a boiler room, a basement, a void under a porch or an attic with access, yes. If it is a mouse inside a sealed plaster wall, no: for a suspected mouse or rat inside an inaccessible wall cavity, opening the wall is often not the first step, and if the carcass cannot be reached without cutting into the structure the odor will typically lessen as decomposition runs its course.
Who removes a deer on I-94 or the Lodge?
MDOT. It states it removes carcasses that pose a hazard on I, M and US routes, reported through the nearest regional office. County roads outside the city sit with the county road agency. A deer on your own lot is yours to arrange.
Will anyone open a wall for a rat?
No. Nobody is going to open plaster or drywall to get a rodent out. Where a cavity connects to an attic or basement it may be reachable from there.
What about a large animal that is not a deer?
The same two things decide it: how heavy, and how close a vehicle can get. Say what it is, roughly how big, where it is and whether a vehicle can get near it. The operator will say on the call whether it is a job they take.
What should I have ready?
Address and ZIP, where on the property, roughly what and how big, how long it has been there, how the operator gets in, and who to bill.
Is cleanup part of it?
Removing the carcass and the soiled material immediately around it, and treating that spot, usually is. Whole-room treatment, replacing insulation across an attic, or rebuilding are separate, and whether the operator offers them is a question for the call.
How soon?
Nobody on this site can tell you when a truck will pull up. The operator tells you that once they have looked at their route. Say it is urgent on the phone rather than in the form.
I sent the form. Now what?
The operator reads it and phones the number you left with a figure. The form books nothing. 313-435-2426 is faster.
